Logistics Management

DoD acquisition logistics management for weapons systems involves a structured process for developing, acquiring, and supporting military equipment throughout its lifecycle. This process, governed by the Defense Acquisition System, ensures that the military has the necessary capabilities while managing costs and risks.

Life Cycle Logistics (LCL) in the DoD acquisition process focuses on planning, developing, implementing, and managing a system's support strategy throughout its entire life cycle, (e.g., Materiel Solutions Analysis, Technology Maturation & Risk Reduction, Engineering & Manufacturing Development, Production and Deployment, Operations and Support) to DEMIL/disposal. It integrates supportability into the acquisition process to ensure weapons systems are effective, affordable, and meet operational needs IAW JCIDS.

AMRAAM

AMRAAM utilized Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) contracting approach for acquiring and sustaining the weapons systems. It focuses on outcome-based metrics, like weapon system availability, rather than just the quantity of parts or services provided.

We incentivized the contractors to improve performance, reduce costs, and enhance overall system readiness for the warfighter utilizing clear metrics that reflect the desired warfighter outcomes, such as system availability, reliability, and maintainability.

With this approach AMRAAM was able to maintain an unprecedented 90-95% field availability.

Operational Effectiveness

Our logistics manager worked closely with PM’s, Engineers (HW/SW), Testers, Contract Officers and FM to ensure Logistics Operational effectiveness, supportability, and suitability was designed in early ensuring long-term supportability and cost-effectiveness well beyond the Production phase.

Staying Current

VIZZ was responsible for maintaining current field technical data for operations and maintenance activities.

In addition, we were responsible for ensuring suitable operator and maintenance training (both classroom and OTJ).
